The purpose of this study is to examine what the desirable roles of local informatization and centers for local information are. The local informatization in Korea, in a real sense, has emerged from the early 1990s as a new strategy for decreasing the information gap among localities and maintaining balanced local development. Without defining its concept and role clearly, however, the local informatization carried out by the central or local governments individually is facing difficult situations in attaining its strategic goals.
From the discussion, this study concludes that the important role of local informatization is to form new local communities toward the information society and the centers for local information have the roles of forming access point, grassroot network, civic forum, public and social services gateway, activating local economies, and solving social problems.
