Major Issues in Hosting International Mega-Events and It’s Implication on Regional Development Policy

The increasing number of nations and cities are bidding to host themega-event such as Olympics Game, football World Cup, and EXPOs, expectingto have an opportunity for improving eonomic and social aspects of a city orregion. But host city not only should make accumulated investment for stagingthe mega-event but also have diverse burdens such as negative impacts.Many studies has been done to estimate these direct and indirect impactsfrom staging mega-event, especially the impact on economic returns andemployment of host city. Among these studies, some reports overestimatethese effects because of strong incentive to justify heavy national subsidies.In this context, this paper reviewed and estimated major issues in biddingand staging these mega-events and proposed some policy implications onregional development policy.For this purpose, this paper tried to make conceptual and operationaldefinition of mega-event and to classify the type of one. And reviewed thereports estimating the impacts of staging mega-event which hosted by Koreangovernment. Finally some policy implications and recommendations has beensuggested for local government and related institute expecting future bidding.
